There have some structures about which we can’t mention that one types of structures are safer than others. But there have some factors based on that we can say that one sort of structures provide safety than other.
These safety provided on structures may depend primarily on their
-but less depends on type
If in design considerations and construction procedures we provide more factor of safety this structures become safer.
We know that in normal reinforced concrete, we provide under-reinforced section to have adequate warning due to yielding of reinforcing steel. After noticeable defection we will have adequate warning that structure will collapse soon, retrofitting or strength is required for even under working load.
In case of prestressed concrete, we should not have to wait for deflection of members of respective structures which is in service already. There have partial test already performed when both steel and concrete subjected to prestressing operation.
In many structures, when prestressing is conducted, engineers provide expected highest stresses that will comes from worst combination of load cases expected to be arrive in their life cycle. So if both materials can withstand initial prestressing systems, we can conclude these structure is safe i.e. have sufficient strength against failure.
This special reinforced concrete moderated by prestressing has been practicing since 1940’s. Till now we have records of 73 years. It can be concluded from 73 years’ experience that life cycle of these structures may be as long as reinforced concrete.
