It should be mentioned that vibratory pile driver can also extract pile too. So the name may be vibratory pile driver or extractor. This type of pile driver has some special advantages like these have less energy loss due to inertia or skin friction development between wide spaced interval of blows in our conventional pile hammer like drop hammer, and steam hammer etc.
They also offer advantages of less noise and less requirements of less vertical clearance to drive. These two advantages make them more important in retrofitting of existing and serviceable building, commercial or industrial projects.
In many cases we have to retrofit our structures for various purposes. Before development of our modern earthquake codes, may structures were design not having sufficient provision to safely diminish earthquake loads in safe path. Even many structures can perform fairly well against earthquake loads but lack sufficient ductility which requires retrofitting. But here we are concerned with foundation retrofitting.
While retrofitting structures, (improperly designed or detailed) we need to perform the job without disturbing the occupants and regular serve of the floor. In most case, vertical clearance is the main criteria for the selection of right pile driving options. There have also limitation not to provide much disturbance to the surrounding foundation of the retrofitted building or adjacent building too.
So far we are discussing about building structures. This situation may occur in retrofitting abutment footing or piers. In such situations vibratory hammer serves the best solution for the pile driving for strengthening the structural elements and as well solving foundation problems.
