Concrete that are subjected to cycle of extensive temperature exposure suffer devastating effects of freezing and thawing cycles. They leave evidence on scaled sidewalk and crumbling walls where repeated effect of freezing and thawing is common.
Their effects are pronounced where adequate care is not adopted in proportioning concrete to provide adequate air content or providing proper and sufficient bubble spacing.

Fineness of cement:
Alkali content of cement:
When alkali content in cement is increased, the air content is also increased.
Amount of cementitious materials:
When concrete contains increased amount of cementitious materials, a decrease in air content is observed.
Pozzolana and slag:
Silica fume, flyash, natural pozzolana and blast furnace slag is believed to affect dosages of air entraining agents.
